From his earliest studies\, his urge for musical rebellion became the major theme of his creative output\, leading him to develop a unique voice that is both consummately beautiful as well as unceasingly refreshing. His artistic philosophy and aesthetic were indelibly linked to those of the Impressionist and Symbolist artists\, through the sense of community they built together as they redefined the boundaries of their respective crafts\, including Claude Monet\, and the symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé\, both of whom were also close friends with Debussy as well as collaborators. While early criticism of the Impressionists was brutally harsh on the whole\, their artistic movement led the Western arts profoundly into the 20th century\, and supported the environmental conditions that enabled Debussy to thrive in his musical output.
